Just a series of random thoughts from today… some things that I wish, and some things that annoy me:
1. Watching Howard Kurtz talk to Bill Safire on Reliable Sources is like watching someone trying to respectfully quiet his elderly grandfather when he starts talking about life during the depression. That said, as much as Kurtz kept trying to keep Safire on point, I actually think it’d be a neat bit of knowledge to know the root of every word in the English language, and I’d probably talk about it too every chance I was given.
2. I didn’t have nearly the appreciation that I should have for flimsy little ’80s comedies like Big and Baby Boom. I have Working Girl and Secret of my Success waiting in cue for my next movie night, but I wish I could think of some more fun little Yuppie flicks I’ve overlooked. That said, I did find a pretty cool way to look for some…
3. An online (and therefore completely unreliable) poll found that women tend to prefer Stephen Colbert to Jon Stewart, while men prefer Stewart; Democrats prefer Stewart while Republicans prefer Colbert; people who follow the news closely prefer Stewart. Personally, I’m probably a bit more of a Colbert fan, but its a close call.
4. I wish they offered demography as a major in college. But only if they did it retroactively to at least the late ’90s.
5. I’m getting a little tired of people using the word post- to mean something more advanced and by definition more positive; a new synonym for “transcend”. This candidate is post-partisan, that candidate is post-race. I wonder if it works for anything — is it possible to be post-kindness? If you get a divorce, are you post-married? Maybe I’ll ask Bill Safire.
6. The Orioles have now lost 2 in a row to the White Sox. 14 – 11 record, and I think we’re still tied for first. We need another rainout.
7. I’m starting to get really annoyed with parents giving their daughters names that end in “a.” Not Sophie, Sophia; not Isabel, Isabella; not Julie, Julia or Juliana; not Emily, Amelia… can’t wait for the trend to turn back…
8. If MSNBC restructured their lineup last month by taking Tucker off the air, adding David Gregory in his slot and giving Andrea Mitchell an afternoon show, why did they keep the “doc block” series from 10 – 12? It’s supposed to be “the place for politics,” right?
9. My absolute pet peeve is when people leave messages on my cell phone just to say that they called and asking that I call them back. It’s a cell phone, I get missed calls, and my assumption is “they called and are asking that I call them back.”
10. I still really wish I could time travel.
