He (still Paul Ryan) actually just mentioned Ayn Rand. He thinks Democrats deliberately drove down the economy so they could blame Republicans and make a case for government intervention… “just like something out of an Ayn Rand novel.”

CPAC, IV

Apparently, Ron Paul (or Howard Roark) won the internal Republican debate.  Individual liberty, “enduring principles of our founding,” pursuit of self-interest or some such thing.  Now, Ryan is railing against “paper money.”  At least the ubiquitous Reagan name-drops have seemingly been replaced by shout-outs to “the Founders.”

CPAC, III

It was inevitable. The session has been open for 15 minutes and we’ve already have our first Democrats = Marx comparison, courtesy Paul Ryan.  Now I think he’s saying the Dems are turning us all into wards of the state or something.

The streaming quality of this video is pretty bad, so I’m missing a lot of the lines.  Paul Ryan is speaking now, and – surprise – he’s talking about the evils of government spending.  The only interesting thing so far is how many conservatives seem to be big fans of the air quote.  It’s weird.

Rep. Michael Arcuri (D-NY) on his participation in the House Populist Caucus, quoted in today’s Washington Times:
“I know if William Jennings Bryan were alive today, he would be standing up with us.”
The article also lists Paul Wellstone as a role-model, and mentions Tom Harkin as a product of the 1980s Populist caucus.
