Since the nomination of Rand Paul almost two weeks ago, there’s been a bit of a fuss over his statements regarding the 1964 Civil Rights Act.  I haven’t really said much about it, not really understanding what everyone finds so surprising about his view.  I suppose libertarianism has been the “victim” of  bastardized terminology almost [...]

Yesterday’s election results definitely say something about the state of American politics – but what that is exactly isn’t quite clear.  Here’s what is known: Rand Paul trounced Trey Grayson in the Kentucky Republican primary, Sestak upset Specter on the Democratic side in Pennsylvania, Blanche Lincoln will be forced to compete in a runoff with [...]

Last week, I was invited to run a volunteer canvass training (door-to-door) for a local Democratic candidate.  I’ve run hundreds of them, but none in the past few years, and I think my vantage point about canvassing has changed a bit since then. A few years ago, I saw canvassing as a way to 1) [...]

What a fun turn the Republican Party has taken… Over the weekend, Lindsey Graham was heckled at the South Carolina Republican Convention for urging the Party to embrace moderates who can “win in Pennsylvania and Connecticut.”  Interesting, but not surprising.  Of course, it does make for an odd Senate delegation from South Carolina: Jim DeMint [...]

Just an annoyance: I’ve been watching some of the fallout from the Specter switch on MSNBC and I can’t help but notice a complete disconnect between my definition of the far-right Republican base and the commentators’ definition of the Party’s base. Let me see if I have my facts right: 1) Arlen Specter was being [...]

Lindsay Graham: (on the pressure conservatives are putting on moderate Republicans) “I don’t want to be a member of the Club for Growth.” Guess he won’t be doing too many fundraisers for Pat Toomey…

He (still Paul Ryan) actually just mentioned Ayn Rand. He thinks Democrats deliberately drove down the economy so they could blame Republicans and make a case for government intervention… “just like something out of an Ayn Rand novel.”

The streaming quality of this video is pretty bad, so I’m missing a lot of the lines.  Paul Ryan is speaking now, and – surprise – he’s talking about the evils of government spending.  The only interesting thing so far is how many conservatives seem to be big fans of the air quote.  It’s weird.

I kind of have the day off work today (which is to say, I have to do stuff as it comes up, but I don’t have to go into the office).  Should be a nice day out, with temperatures expected to hit mid-50s by this afternoon, and while that’s not top-down weather for my car, [...]
